Living Jewel

from $100.00

Tree Snails were once referred to as the “living jewels” of South Florida’s subtropical forests by National Geographic. These native beauties thrived in the tropical hardwood hammock forests of South Florida and are still common in the Southern Everglades, but their populations have dwindled dramatically throughout the 20th century. Habitat loss, environmental degradation, overcollection, and the ever-looming threat of invasive species have all contributed to their decline. Among these, the most critical and puzzling menace is the predation by invasive snail-eating land planarians, rapidly encroaching upon tropical regions.
